As a photographer, I deal with metadata (pertaining specifically to photos) on a daily basis. It's part of my job. Until recently, most Americans did not know metadata even existed, and those that did often had only a loose understanding of it. It was with the release of NSA documents by Edward Snowden and the revelations that the NSA logs the metadata of anything and everything it can get its hands on, that metadata has made its way into general public knowledge. Yet, still, many do not understand exactly what metadata is, and how much information metadata can provide about an image, and about the person behind the image.
